Articles have been printed with conflicting information, regarding this incident. The investigation of the events that took place March 21, 2011, that lead to the death of 19-year-old Carlos Lamadrid, were taken over by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

After one year, Carlos Lamadrid’s family is still waiting for answers.

After the Arizona Legislature and Governor Jan Brewer passed HB2281, the Tucson Unified School District voted to ban the Mexican American Studies (MAS) program, in a 4-1 vote.  The successful MAS program was dissolved and books were removed from classrooms.

March 16, 2012, a caravan of Librotraficantes (book traffickers) came to Tucson, Arizona.  These librotraficantes were made up of authors, poets, artists and activists.  They smuggled over 1,000 Mexican American Studies books and literature, worth $20,000.  Their goal: to stash a caché in the Southwest with underground libraries of the contraband materials.

The 7th Ave Alleyway Project is a collective effort to reduce crime, increase health in a positive way, and an opportunity to create a safe, healthy, and sustainable community.
