Tohono O’odham youth from Sells warn about the dangers of junk food zombies and more great videos about health and sustainable living form some creative kids! Videos were made in Pan Left Community Media Education workshop with Tohono O’odham Community Action earlier this year in summer 2012.

Truth On The Line is a fictional story, but it contains many situations, issues, and people that are based on reality, and will be readily familiar to many who live in southern Arizona or who follow the national debate about immigration and the border.

The story of TOTL centers around the staff of a TV news program called News On The Line as they engage in the daily struggle to produce quality journalism and inform the public about immigration and border issues.  Stan, one of the anchors of the program, wants to change the way they do things, but there’s considerable organizational inertia and worries about funding.  Meanwhile there’s other mediamakers in town who have their own way of reporting the news.

Pan Left Productions new documentary Under Arpaio is now available on YouTube so that people can learn about the struggle for justice in Arizona and the atrocities perpetuated by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.  Directed by Jason Michael Aragón this film shows the struggle against hate and intimidation by racist laws like SB1070 which has reached a critical turn. Police are now being trained to enforce SB1070 and arrest people suspected of being undocumented, racial profiling has spread fear in Arizona communities, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio continues to use the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office to intimidate and abuse people without accountability. Beyond her many accomplishments, she was a tireless advocate for women and human rights in our community. MC worked for social justice in issues such as migrant rights, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, free speech, and advocacy for arts and education. She was committed to preserving access to community grassroots media and was a board member for Access Tucson.  Her time here was cut short at age 50, but she lived in this world as person who had many lifetimes worth of experiences. A world traveler, committed friend, and true woman living without borders. We will miss her.

As of the date this video was posted, US Border Patrol Information Office did not respond to the video producers request for comments.

Articles have been printed with conflicting information, regarding this incident. The investigation of the events that took place March 21, 2011, that lead to the death of 19-year-old Carlos Lamadrid, were taken over by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

After one year, Carlos Lamadrid’s family is still waiting for answers.

After the Arizona Legislature and Governor Jan Brewer passed HB2281, the Tucson Unified School District voted to ban the Mexican American Studies (MAS) program, in a 4-1 vote.  The successful MAS program was dissolved and books were removed from classrooms.

March 16, 2012, a caravan of Librotraficantes (book traffickers) came to Tucson, Arizona.  These librotraficantes were made up of authors, poets, artists and activists.  They smuggled over 1,000 Mexican American Studies books and literature, worth $20,000.  Their goal: to stash a caché in the Southwest with underground libraries of the contraband materials.
